Rearranging equations
Gathering terms
‘b2’term
‘ab’ term
‘a’ term
‘a’ term
‘a’ term
You can add or subtract like terms only
You cannot mix terms
So the above equation can be simplified to
6a + 2ab - b2
Another good idea is
to underline each
type of term in a
different colour
In this first example
All the types of term
are in a different
Colour so that they
Can be gathered
Together and
simplified
3a +4a = 7a
2b - b = b
So the simplified equation is
7a + b +2c
You can also do this by eliminating numbers from each side
either by adding, subtracting, multiplying or dividing
3x -1 = x + 7
Add 1 to each side
3x -1 + 1 = x + 7 + 1
We then get
3x = x + 8
Now subtract x from each side
3x - x = x + 8 - x
We now get
2x = 8
divide both side by 2
2x/2 = 8/2
Final answer      x = 4
